Software developer
October 2011
We have a vacancy for a Software Developer at Rhombus Systems.
We will expect you to do the following:
- Create and maintain code for the Rhombus Factory Information System.
- Help customers to use the system via telephone and remote control, and fix bugs where necessary.
- Visit customer sites from time to time to commission new systems and give training to customers.
Our software falls into two main categories. The first is user transactions and reporting with a database, the second is multi-threaded real-time data collection.
Most of our software is written in Delphi to run on Windows platforms and is written completely with objects. We use Delphi both for our data collection and transactional software. We also write some of our data collection software in C for Rabbit processor based single board computers.
Your skills
You must have experience with an object orientated language and must understand the power of objects. Delphi experience would be good, but it is not essential, provided that you are prepared to learn Delphi.
Our development process is much nearer Agile than Waterfall, so you will have lots of contact with our customers, both helping them with problems and discussing ideas for improvements. You must therefore have a good telephone manner.
We all work on the same code, so it is very important that you produce readable code using a consistent style.
Working at Rhombus Systems
- Rhombus Systems is a tiny but long established company.
- We have a small number of customers, all of whom are manufacturers, who are enthusiastic users of our software.
- Because our systems interface directly with our customers' machines, there are always interesting projects to do with sensors and signals. We also get involved with interfaces to other ERP systems.
- We have customers around the world so there are occasional opportunities for international travel.
- We have a reputation for innovation and excellent customer service.
- The ideas you bring will be welcomed.
- You will be managed by an experienced software engineer.
- Picking up a new programming language is not regarded as a big deal.
- There is no career path at Rhombus Systems, the attraction of the job is its technical content and variety.
- We work hard, and then we go home and forget about it.
- We don't do company social events, team bonding days or other distractions.
- We recognize that family life produces unpredictable events which we do our best to accommodate.
Remuneration
The salary we offer will depend on your skills, experience and how quickly you can make a positive contribution to the business.
We are not a start up so salary payments are reliable.
